Getting married in Tatarstan: how it actually goes

People ask me this a lot: what do you actually have to do to get married in Tatarstan? So here's the sequence, in normal language.

Nothing gets scheduled until her parents are comfortable with you. That means visits, conversations, direct questions and a bit of time. Rushing this part is the single most common mistake foreign men make.

Once they're happy, everything else moves surprisingly quickly.

The Nikah is the Islamic marriage. In practice you need both people freely consenting, witnesses, an agreed mähär — a gift from you to her, and it's hers, not her family's — and an imam to conduct it. Often it's done at home with close relatives, sometimes in a mosque.

Different imams and communities ask for slightly different things, so agree the details with the imam who'll actually be doing it rather than trusting something you read online. Our Nikah Center covers the questions that come up most.

The Nikah doesn't register you with the state, so there's a separate civil ceremony. As a foreigner you should expect to need your passport with a valid visa, translated and certified documents, and a paper from your own country showing you're free to marry.

Expect a lot of people, an enormous table, songs, speeches, and chak-chak stacked like a monument. Usually no alcohol at all — please don't bring any.
