Marriage in Tatarstan, step by step

Before any date is set, her parents must be satisfied about you: your faith, your work, your previous marriages and your plans for children. Expect direct questions and answer them plainly.

Asking her father's blessing is remembered even when he replies that the decision is hers.

The Nikah is the Islamic marriage contract: free consent from both sides, witnesses, an agreed mähär (the gift to the bride), and an imam to conduct it. In Tatarstan it is often held at home or in a mosque, with close family present.

The state marriage is registered separately at a registry office. As a foreign groom you should expect to provide a passport with a valid visa, a certified translation of your documents, and proof that you are free to marry, issued or legalised according to your own country's rules.

A Tatar wedding is generous and long: many relatives, a heavy table, chak-chak, songs and speeches. Alcohol is usually absent, and it should never be brought.
